Preschoolers
Seize the day!
Your three-year old wakes up each day ready to discover and learn. Work is play and play is work. Now he/she runs, jumps, walks on tiptoes, kicks balls forward, and attempts to hop. Language grows and words and sentences readily come together to express needs and desires.
Why becomes the word of choice! With constant questions your toddler invites you to become a co-learner and have conversation. All the questions and conversations encourage use of new words, changing ideas and activities, and different ways to explore. Although three-year-olds thrive on interaction, frustration happens--especially if you are not listening. Thoughtful listening builds good conversation. Reading to your child gives each of you exercise in listening. Your listening and observing validates your preschooler. Talk, listen, and enjoy sharing ideas back and forth.
Listen and observe your child's interests and engage your child with those interests. Encourage your child to develop an I can attitude. It will take longer to get dressed, eat meals, clean up toys, and walk to destinations. Cherish these moments--your child is developing independence.
Sharing moments with your child teaches your child how to share. Three-year olds like to defend their possessions. Now is the time to show your child how to share. Provide opportunities in small and large groups for taking turns and sharing favorite toys. It takes practice...home is a safe place to learn how!
Keep your sense of humor and you will feel delight each day!
